The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that massage therapists placed about 97,000 jobs in 2004. Most massage therapists are self-employed and own their own company. The total amount are independent contractors or are employed by massage services that are offered by businesses. Included in these are schools, health groups, medical practices and sports organizations.
An aging citizenry and broader acceptance of alternative medical practices will simply raise the demand for massage therapists. Baby-boomers will bring their gratitude for concept to their senior years and older people, generally, are recognizing the benefits of massage as a support for a more active lifestyle. Organizations have started offering on-site massage to workers to help deal with on-the-job stress and help increase efficiency. Health insurance providers are recognizing the contribution of massage to general health and several are including massage within their coverage.
The outlook is bright for potential and current massage therapists. The work offers an opportunity to function independently and a great deal of freedom. Income levels are good and increasing and the social aspects are quite appealing to those who enjoy helping and interacting with many different people. Registration in massage schools is on the good schools and rise, committed students and increased need bode well for future massage therapists.
