To review our last segment, the Lincoln Cent has encountered many changes. From the VDB initials debate, composition changes and reverse changes very nearly 50 years back (from Wheat to Memorial). The versatile dollar has seen its share of changes.
Just what exactly does the future hold for the Lincoln cent? Legislation was recently passed authorized various money changes. Some of those changes involved the cent. The Lincoln dime Title III to the Presidential Dollar Coin Act requires the removal of the Lincoln Memorial reverse to be replaced with four different patterns showing living of Lincoln. In the text of regulations the brand new reverses are known as (A) his early childhood and delivery in Kentucky; (B) his formative years in Indiana; (C) his professional existence in Illinois; and (D) is presidency, in Washington D.C. These changes would appear in 2009.
Furthermore to these circulating types, the regulation also says, The Secretary of the Treasury shall issue 1-cent coins in 2009 with as the 1-cent coin because the Secretary determines to be appropriate for numismatic purposes contained in 1909 in such number the precise metallic material. Can this be a style or perhaps a wheat penny? Who knows? It will be a coin struck as evidence or uncirculated as non-circulating legal tender.
In 2010 and beyond, the legislation states, The style on the opposite of the 1-cent coins issued after December 31st, 2009 should carry an image emblematic of President Lincoln's maintenance of the Untied States of America as an individual and united nation. This could be an unspecified design or could return back once again to the Lincoln Memorial. Since this is a long period away, number decision on this seems to be immanent. One problem that does appear to be answered is that the dollar will remain made despite some requires its discontinuance. Many feel the dollar is no longer useful and should fade similar to the cent. We will see. patent pending
